Saturday, March 3, 1 p.m.: Reopening of the Union County Museum and Shop from winter closure. The museum will feature an exhibit that celebrates Union County’s bicentennial. The county was officially created on January 2, 1818 when Illinois was still a territory.

The exhibit will include:

-Copies of the 1818 census of Union County.

-Plat maps showing the location of those owning property in Union County and the City of Jonesboro in 1818.

-The 1819 Jonesboro Township poll book.

-A list of the 1807 and 1813 squatters in Union County, and where they were living.

-Maps showing the progression of the development of the State of Illinois.

-Other artifacts from the early 1800s.

The exhibit run will through the end of April. The Union County Historical and Genealogy Society plans to conduct several events for the county’s and state’s bicentennial. A variety of exhibits will be at the museum throughout the year and several historical lectures are planned.

The shop next to the museum will also reopen and will feature a variety of newly stocked items for sale. The shop will have spring/garden items, Easter items, artificial flowers, glassware, and other collectibles. Proceeds from the shop go for the operation of the museum and historical society projects.


Saturday, May 5: Cobden Community Yard Sale Day.  Special hours at the museum and shop, 8a.m.-5p.m.


Friday and Saturday, August 3 & 4: Cobden Peach Festival. Special hours at the museum and shop, 9am.-5p.m.


Saturday, October 6: Cobden Community Yard Sale Day.  Special hours at the museum and shop, 8a.m.-5p.m.


Saturday, October 13: Union County Colorfest Celebration. Special hours at the museum and shop, 10a.m.-5p.m.

Special Note: The City of Jonesboro plans to celebrate its bicentennial during the Colorfest celebration.  We will try to have more information in the next newsletter.


November/December (dates to be announced): Christmas Shop for the benefit of the Union County Museum.


Saturday, December 1: Christmas in the Village of Cobden.  The society will conduct a special exhibit at the resource center.

All Events at the Union County Museum are free and open to the public.  No Admission charge.

The General Store is usually in operation when the museum is normally open.  This depends on if we have enough volunteers to open both the museum and the store.  Otherwise please use the above dates for official openings of the General Store.
