April-May: Hair Art Exhibit at Union County Museum

Hair art from the collection of Frances and Charles Swedlund of Cobden is the featured exhibit through May at the Union County Museum in Cobden

Hair art was popular with the Victorians from 1837 to 1901 during the reign of Queen Victoria of England.  It is one of the few parts of the deceased that can be kept as a remembrance.

Intricately woven, large framed wreaths to small pieces of jewelry make up the 30 piece collection which celebrates marriages, births and commemorates the death of a loved one.

Additional pieces of their hair art collection are on exhibit at the University Museum on the Southern Illinois University campus in Carbondale.

Monday, May 30, Dedication of G.A.R. Monument.

A three foot by four foot gray, granite monument is being placed by the Union County Historical and Genealogy in the Cobden City Cemetery at the Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) burial plot.

The monument with the names of the nine Civil War veterans interred at the site is being unveiled at a dedication ceremony Monday, May 30 following Cobden’s Annual Memorial Day service at 9:30 a.m.

The plot was established in 1889 by the Cobden Post of the G.A.R.

This is the 150th anniversary of the founding of the G.A.R., a national organization whose primary purpose was to preserve the names of those who gave their lives in defense of their country and to assist their widows and orphans.  General John A. Logan of Murphysboro served three terms as the Commander-in-Chief of the G.A.R.

An exhibit including the original 1882 Cobden G.A.R. Charter, Civil War weapons, Gen. Logan and G.A.R. related memorabilia of the period is being sponsored by the Historical Society and will be in the cemetery Chapel.

The Cobden Woman’s Club is hosting a reception in the Chapel following the ceremony.

The public is invited and all of the events are free.
