Preserving the Past for the Future
The Union County Historical and Genealogical Society was originally formed in 1974 with the purpose of preserving and promoting local history. The society developed a relationship with the Cobden Museum in the 1980s. The museum was founded in 1961 and had amassed an impressive collection that was in need of preservation. It had also developed into a local and popular tourist attraction. The society in 1986 acquired the historic DuBois building in downtown Cobden and began a restoration project that took several years. In 2006 the owners of the Cobden Museum donated the museum’s artifacts to the society and the society opened the Union County Museum in the summer of that year.
